Hi! friends…..

All plant lovers, terrace farmers…Don’t have a green thumb for organic terrace gardening? not satisfied with your own veggies? though nurturing them with lot  of love and care…. Do you feel there must be some thing that is needed to your plants. Got vexed with tasteless . unhealthy and inorganic food….  How  long it’s been that you said, “wow! The food tastes awesome or tastes like amrutam”…….yes…..amrutam!!!!
Word amrutam  has a well-known meaning that , it gives eternity, strength and beauty. Amrutam is something that we can never taste, but heard about it from our elders. However, we can prepare it in another form and enjoy the taste through plants. Maybe, puzzled what am I talking about…..its nothing but jeevamrutam…yes exactly JA which can be prepared both solid and liquid…with patience and interest.

When did I get to know about Jeevamrutham?

DSC_0375 copy

Like any plant lover rather I can say any passionate plant lover….I too tried a lot to nurture my plants …I tried some products like DAP which gave me very good result instead I can say very quick result.  The excessive use of DAP had effected my plants and soil very badly.  I noticed the earthworms disappearing , when I overturned the pot .As we know ,that doesn’t  last long which comes quickly, had been proved. The produce was instant but not lasting. I wanted something which may take some time to give result but must be long lasting…..then i searched and made queries in this regard which had finally put an end to my worry. I came to know about Jeevamrutham, a wonderful solution through one of my acquaintances. Then, Once a week I used to purchase it for my plants…as the number of plants were increasing the quantity also was needed to increase which was costing me much. Then I decided to do something in zero budget. I just inquired some and tried it once in a small quantity(about…10 lit) wow!!!!! It really worked and no limits to happiness on my success on first attempt of preparing the wonderful, healthy  and perfect nutrition to plants. Yes…. The jeevamrutam was ready….I applied it to my plants…then what???? wonderful!!!!!!!! produce…no..no..healthy produce. It worked like a boost both to my plants and me(it acted as a boost to my efforts).

Today let us learn about Preparation Of liquid  jeevamrutam.

  • All you need is the following material… for preparing 20 ltrs
    materials for jeevamrutham
  • A big and spacious tumbler about 25 lt
  • A wooden stick!?
  • Cowdung(preferably desi) 1 kgs
  • Cow urine(preferably desi) 1 ltr
  • Jaggery Organic  200 grms
  • Besan 200 grms
  • Anthill soil (Fist full
Select a shady place (the solution should not be exposed to sunlight)

How To Make

Fill the tumbler with water
Add cow dung and urine,  mash cowdung with your hands to avoid lumps. (As Shown In The Picture Below)

Mixing cow dung
Removing Lumps
Then add jaggery, besan,and anthillsoil
Blend all these ingredients well with the above mentioned wooden stick.
Mix the solution clockwise and…this helps in mixing of all the ingredients evenly.
Stir the solution thrice a day for better result. (As Shown In Picture Below

Mixing With Hands

Cover the solution with a cloth to avoid flies. Do not cover it with lid, this would hinder the growth of Microbes.

MahaGro All Purpose Premium Potting Mix- With Cocopeat & Organic Fertilizer- 10kg

When is jeevamrutam ready to apply?

Let the solution ferment for three days. You must stir the solution at regular intervals ( with the wooden stick).
This would help in multiplication of microbes, which is the key function in the whole process of JA preparation . After three days you will notice the solution nicely fermented forming thick foam on the surface. Nicely fermented Jeevamrutham smells sweet. This is the indication that the solution is ready to apply to the plants. You will find the effect of JA clearly…..

DSC_0372 copy
Forming Thick Foam

How to use jeevamrutam?
Mix JA and water in 1:10 ratio I,e add 1mug JA to 10 mugs of water. Then pour 1mug to each of your plants ( if your plants are planted in the ground , you can increase the quantity little more and sprinkle on the plant thoroughly).you can also spray the solution after filtering it(to avoid  blockage) with the help of a sprayer. This would help the plant absorb the solution through leaves, which is faster compared to the absorption  from roots. Spraying would also help the plant fight against  pests.

Handfull Produce

In the previous post we learnt about liquid jeevamrutam, which lasts for a short period, but surely a wonderful recipe for plants. But what to do to store it for a longer period. It may not be possible for busy plant lovers to prepare jeevamrutam, every week.Another important Organic Manure is Vermi Compost.Adding V`C to the potting soil would help the plant for a month or two.V`C is usefull to the plants, But Practically its not possible to remix the soil with vermi compost. Hence, plants require slow realeasing organic manure.

What’s the solution?

The solution is Ghana jeevamrutam, which means solid form of jeevamrutam. It also has the same ingredients and features, but the preparation is quite different.  G – J can be stored up to six months.

How is it different from liquid jeevamrutam?

It is not different from liquid jeevamrutam, but only the preparation.  We find it in the form of balls and cakes.

How to use it?

Depending on the size of plant and size of ball or cake, we need to place one or two near the plant or we can Powder the balls and apply to the plant. After placing the G–J balls, cover it with dry leaves/Wood Husk (Mulching),this would help in retaining Moisture and growth in Microbes. If u want to plant a new plant, mix the Powdered Ghana Jeevamrutham to the potting soil.

Roots Going Into G-J

How Do Earth Worms Help ?

Earthworms has a special character. Unlike any other living being it works all the 365 days .An earthworm has a capacity to dig up to 15ft deep into the soil and come back  to the top. these burrows made by earthworms  create pores. these pores help in obsorbing oxygen and water in to the soil , and leaving carbondioxide. Loosened soil has an  opportunity of absorbing water and nutrients(from GJ) thoroughly. As we know bacteria plays a key role in releasing nutrients from organic matter and supply it t o the plant, these bacteria and fungi(which is also important in the process) become more active in the presence of earthworms.

Feeling really excited to prepare G–J and enjoy the results lively, then let us learn the preparation.

How to prepare Ghana jeevamrutam?

It’s very simple to prepare. All we need is the following material.

materials for making of ghana jeevamrutham

Materials Required For G – J

  • Cow dung – 10 kgs
  • Cow urine – As Per Requirement
  • peas besan powder – 1 & 1/2 kgs
  • Jaggery – 1 & 1/2 kgs
  • Anthill Soil – fist full

Preparation:

Take cow dung and add besan to it and mix thoroughly. Now add Grated jaggery and slowly blend it with cow urine (consistency must be like Chapathi Dough) Excessive Use of Cow Urine May Loosen the Mix. After mixing all these ingredients thoroughly, make medium size balls and let them dry under shade.  Do not expose the balls to sunlight, that would hinder the growth of microbes.

After seven days when the balls are completely dried, we can store and use them for our plants.

7 Ways To Use Banana Peels As Fertilizer

By : Kavili Sridhar

Banana Peels uses

Hi friends!
A very good morning/ evening.....

Have u all had your tea...great. What about your plants..  are  they served tea?
Yes......did u serve your plants tea?  Wondering what am I talking about,

don't consider it to be nonsense.
Yes!!!!! your plants can also enjoy tea, like us to get refresh, and work more energetic....Most of us dont know that plants can also be served tea, out of waste that we just throw away........ Ok friends let us know how to do this....

We learnt about Jeevamrutham and Ghana Jeevamrutham in our previous posts. Today let us learn about tea preparation for our plants. It is something like best out of waste.

In previous days we had a small function at our residence , bananas were also served, as a part of meal. All the relatives threw the banana peels in an organised way into the dustbin. The bin was completely filled, since the gathering was big. Looking at such a big pile of banana peels, I felt not to throw them outside instead I can use it for some purpose(ever since I've started terrace gardening , I'm finding every waste as best material) I,e for plants. I read some articles and gathered information on how this waste can be proved as best source of nutrition to my plants. I was amazed to learn the fact, that these peels are a very good source of nutrition to our plants.

let us know some interesting facts about this, just for knowledge........

Banana peels, especially dried one has around 40-43% of potassium.
It is also rich in calcium, manganese, sodium, magnesium, and sulfur., which are needed by every plant.
Hope the post would serve some cause....

Banana peels as fertilizer
Banana Peels ready to use As Ferilizer

Then I learnt about different ways of using banana peels as best organic fertilizer to my plants. Below are some ways to use banana peels for the plants.

"My GreenPot Plant Food - a unique pro-biotic for your plant"© An all purpose Natural Organic Compost Fertilizer for all your pots, plants and gardens - 2 kg pack

We can prepare tea out of  banana peels. All we need is some banana peels, a big glass jar and water.

Banana Peel Tea
Banana Peel Tea

Put all the banana peels in a jar and fill it with water. Leave it for two days. Then drain all the water in to another container. This water is nothing but Banana Peel Tea. Spray it to your plants.

Now, what to do with the peels?

After draining the water,  take out the peels, cut them into small pieces and put them in the soil near plants. This would help in decomposition of peels into the soil.

Chop the peels
Cut The Peels
chopped banana peels
Choped peels Added to plant

Apart from tea is there any other way to use these  peels?
Dried Banana Peels
Dried Banana Peels

Yes, definitely ...... We can use these peels in some other way . we can powder them and store in a bottle. All we need to do is....
Drying up the peels and then grinding them thoroughly in a grinder. You can sprinkle the powder to your plants.

Powdered Banana Peels
Powdered Banana Peels
Apart from tea and powder we can make use of the banana peels in some other ways also.

If you are  making compost on your own, instead of purchasing , then the whole banana peels would be an added benefit to your compost. These peels are favourite to earthworms, resulting in rich output.

banana peels to compost
Composting
This compost can be added to plants, or you can also put the compost at the borders of the bed , when your plants start flowering.....

You can also use the whole peel as it is ......
When you sow a seed, just dig the trench little deeper than usual, then place the whole peel, and add the seeds on the top. When this

banana peels to soil
is done , now you can fill the trench . this would help the plant right from its root growth. As the peels decompose , it create a very  rich fertilizer to the plant.

Is there any other way to use banana peels?

Yes!!!!!!

We can also use banana peel as spray. Wondering how such fibrous thing can be used as spray!?

Here is the procedure .....

All you need is the following material
5 banana  peels

Banana Peels,Egg shells, Epsom Salt
3 egg shells
1 tbsp Epsom salt
Water
1litre Spray bottle

Place the banana peels in a sunny area outside, on a parchment paper, or in any other container, so that you can remove the dried pieces easily.
Peels must be dried until they turn black, I,e they are completely  dried.
After the peels are completely dried, place these peels and eggshells in the blender and make them into fine powder.
Now add epsom salt and this powder to the spray bottle, and fill it with water.

Thoroughly shake the bottle, so that the material inside dissolves in to the water.
Now the spray is ready to apply to your plants.

*Some safety measures*...

Do not spray the mixture directly on plants, that  are in complete sunlight , instead spray into the soil around the plant .

Since it is a fertilizer, avoid excessive use, otherwise the plant may burn.

Apply in small quantities to know , how much is needed by each plant.

If you are fortunate and bestowed with a large garden, then mixup the solution in big tumblers and pour around your plants.

Fermented banana peels

For better blooms and strong plants, we can use fermented banana peels to our plants.

The procedure is almost same as banana peels tea, but  we have to let the mixture ferment for a week. We can name it as fermented banana peels. Let us know the procedure.

Banana Peels Fermenting procedure
Fermented Banana Peels.

Put the banana peels in a jar and fill it with enough water. The peels must settle at the bottom, for which ,you may need to  put some weight on the peels.

Cover the jar with a cloth, and tie it loosely. (As shown in the picture)
Now, allow the mixture ferment at least for a week. This week's time help the bacteria absorb nutrients from banana peels ,and let it go into the mixture.

It's all fine and the mixture will get fermented nicely.  In course of this one week We need to make certain observations.....

If we find any mist inside the bottle, that's OK, but if we find any black mold , we need to throw away the mixture ,and start the procedure again.

After the prescribed time, I,e one week, make a nice puree of the peels in a blender, and apply to your plants.

Till now we learnt how to nourish our plants with the help of banana peels. Seeing the plants bloom and nice produce is really wonderful, but  our plants face some inconvenience due to many unwanted insects. These insects harm the plants in the growth. So we need some solution for this. The beauty here is, the nourishing banana peels also act as insect trap.

INSECT TRAP!!!!!!!!

 Yes......insect trap.

How to do ?

As you know it is purely non-toxic solution,  there is nothing to worry about it.  All you need to do is.......
apple cider vinegar
Apple Cider Vinegar

Add all the pieces of banana peels with the vinegar in a small container, make holes to the container, so that insects pass through it. During this , the scent released from the solution keeps the insects away from the plants. The insects doesn't like the smell and keeps away.

It is not a total solution for the problem, but helps to some extent. At least our plants do not get accompanied with harmful chemical insect traps.

Organic Dews Organic Liquid Fertilizer Seaweed Extract Concentrate For Plants (250 Ml) With Measuring Cup(25 Ml)

Aphids
Aphids
  Another major problem
faced by the plants is, in the form of
APHIDS. To get rid of these aphids, we can  place chopped banana peels just under the  layer of soil. Aphids hate the smell of peels.

                 How To Grow Tomatoes

By : Kavili Sridhar

Hi friends!
Tomato Plant

Hope the previous post regarding uses of banana peels helped ur plants.

Today let us learn some tips to safeguard our plants from inbuilt deficiencies. Especially, tomato plants.

Let me share my idea of transplanting a tomato plant.

Do you know? Like a child ,when shifted to a new place cannot  adjust or feel insecure,  the same way our plants also feel insecure when transplanted. They'll be under shock!!! Resulting in some deficiencies. To overcome this problem, we have to take some simple measures while transplanting.

What do we need to do?

Before transplanting a tomato plant, take an empty pot, put a stone near the hole, to avoid blockage, and easy water drain. For a tomato plant , excessive water or water stagnation is not suitable.

Growing Tomato plant in a container
Empty Pot With Good Drain
After placing the stone, put a layer of soil. Now place a whole Banana and Raw Egg.

Raw Egg - Banana
Add Whole Banana & Raw Egg
After that cover it with another layer of soil. Now add 1or2 tbs of epsom salt.

Growing Tomato plant in a container
Cover It with Soil

Adding Epsom Salt
Sprinkle Epsome Salt

Why Epsom salt?

Epsom salt doesn't actually mean salt, but is a mixture of
Epsom salt
Epsom Salt
magnesium and sulfur, which is easily soluble in water. This helps tomato plant a lot . we commonly observe bottom rot in tomatoes, which is due to calcium deficiency. Epsom salt helps in drawing calcium from the soil, if added during transplantation. It helps in germination and cell development during photosynthesis.

After adding Epsom salt Transplant the plant , and fill with soil.

Growing Tomato plant in a container
Transplanting

Now, sprinkle 1or2 tbs of Epsom salt, around the plant.

Sprinkle Epsom Salt

 Now, pour water.

Growing Tomato plant in a container
Adding Water
Pouring water helps Epsom salt reach the roots, helping it recover the shock of transplanting. Hence, you can See Your plants growing and blooming actively.

Why whole banana?

During the process of plant growth , the whole banana under it would decompose and acts as natural fertilizer.

Why raw egg?

Blossom-Rot
Bottom-Rot
As we know eggs are good in calcium, not only  for us but also for plants. Hence we place a raw egg before transplantation of the plant. It would help the plant absorb calcium , which make the plant healthy. The major benefit of using whole banana and raw egg is to overcome the problem of Bottom - Rot to the blooms, or the fully formed tomatoes.

Making Of Compost Tea

Hi friends!!!!
Compost tea

Hope the previous post helped your plants.
Have u all had your tea, is it the same flavour or you tried something different?
It's not a bad idea to try something different. Hope u all agree...

In one of the previous posts we learnt about banana peel tea..your plants must have liked it very much. But as we do, our plants also want to taste different flavors. So, why not try some new recipe of tea for our plants.

In this post let us see a different flavor for our plants.
Puzzled what it is !?

It is nothing but compost tea. A wonderful energy booster for the plants.

What is compost tea?
Compost tea is a natural plant fertilizer, with rich nutritious value.  Since we can spray it ,it would help in fighting fungus.

Nutrients and  good bacteria are extracted during the process of making compost tea.

Why compost tea, instead of using compost directly?
It's  a common query. There are some benefits in using compost tea( not denying the fact that direct compost is equally important)......

*It is not possible to use direct compost all the time

* if the gardener has beautiful lawn, it is not possible to apply direct compost.

* the process of compost tea makes microbes active, thus helping your plants with good brew.

How to make compost tea?

Compost tea preparation need two full days. All we need is the following material...
Compost Tea Material
Materials For Compost Tea
  • 50 ltr barrel
  • Compost
  • Cow dung
  • Cow urine

How To Get Rid Of Mealy - Bugs

                                                              By : Kavili Sridhar

Mealy Bugs
Hi friends!!!!
Hope the previous post helped your plants.
In previous posts we learnt about different nutritious recipies for plants, and also some tips to overcome some defects in fruits.

Apart from these deficiencies, which are inborn , there are some outside threats to our plants. They are in the form of pests.

As plant lovers, we know how miserable it is to see our plants suffer with certain kind of pest. Now the question raises , how to control these pests. We know there are many pest control chemicals in the market. If we apply them to our plants , our problem is solved. Then what is the use of taking so many hardships and growing our plants with all organic fertilizers. Why can't we take some harmless pest control  measures, in low cost, within the reach of  our kitchen.
Mealy Bugs

Now, let us talk about the most harmful pest , that sucks all the juice from the plant, leaving it lifeless.

Mealy bug, the white  cottony looking pest , which multiplies in number, is a great threat to the plants.
These mealy bugs grow rapidly in moist areas.
Mealy Bugs
Ants - Mealy Bugs

  How to control these pests?

  •  Regularly spray the plant with Neem oil.
  • Control ants which protects mealy bugs from destruction, since they depend on secretion of these bugs.
  • Another important, most economical pest. Control method is using VIM LIQUID. Wondered!!!!

Vim Liquid
Vim Liquid - Vegetable Oil

Yes ....vim liquid which we use as dish washer helps in controlling these pests. All we need to do is to dilute 1tbs VIM LIQUID and 1tbs vegetable oil in one litre water, and spray to plants.

Why VIM LIQUID and vegetable oil
Vegetable oil helps in sticking the liquid to plant.
The foam of VIM liquid suffocates the bug and destroys it.
After applying the solution leave the plant undisturbed for two days. Miraculously, you find all the bugs falling down dry and lifeless.

Not exaggeration, but you just apply it and see the miracle with your own eyes.
It's my personal experience....it really works try.....

HOW TO KILL SPIDER MITES Naturally
                                                                                      By : Kavili Sridhar
Hi friends!!!
Hope the previous post helped your plants.
Spider Mites
Red Spider Mite
In the previous post we learnt how to get rid of Mealy Bugs, which is a major threat to our plants.

Another threat in the form of Spider Mites is also something very serious, which makes our plants completely lifeless.
The problem is, unlike mealybugs, these spider mites are not visible to our naked eye, unless they are completely grown, and are found in the lower part of the leaf. We need to regularly monitor our plants, with a magnifying glass.
These spider mites are found sticking to the lower layer of the leaf, which is not visible with out a magnifying glass.

Spider Mites
Spider Mite Attack

Spider Mites
Spider Mite Attack
What is the solution to this problem?
As we are using all organic fertilizers, to maintain the nutritious values of our produce, the same has to be maintained by using some organic pest control measures.
Now, have you heard about Ghost Pepper ( you can see in the pic below, if not familiar with it) ?

Bhoot Jolokia Chilli (Ghost Pepper)
Bhoot Jolokia Chilli (Ghost Pepper)

Yes!!! Ghost pepper  which is our solution to the problem of spider mites.

All you need to do is the following..

Bhoot Jolokia Chilli (Ghost Pepper)
Boiling Stage
  • First, cover your nose with a mask, and wear gloves, since the pepper is very strong and may give burning sensation.
  •  Take some ghost pepper, split it vertically, and slice .
  •  Now take a bowl and fill it water, and put on a slow flame, so that the water doesn't boil.
  •  Now add the sliced pepper, and let it heat ,not boil.
  •  After you see the vapour, turn off the flame.
  • Now let the water come to room temperature.
  • Then strain water into another bowl, and transfer into a sprayer.
  • Now, it is ready to apply to your plants.
  • Apply the spray from bottom to top.
  • After the application, leave the plant undisturbed for one day, and clean with little force of water, so that all the dead mites drop down.

Work is not done with one spray. You need to repeat the process( spraying and cleaning) twice or thrice, unless you find no traces of mites, when you observe with a magnifying glass.
After the job is done wash hands thoroughly.
Hope, the post saves your plants from mites.

 How To Kill Aphids Naturally

  By:Kavili Sridhar

Hi!!  Friends
Aphids
Aphids

Hope the previous post served your purpose.

It's obvious that plants are always troubled by some pests. In previous posts we learnt , how to get rid of Mealy bugs and Spider Mites. Apart from these two there is  another pest, which also proves to be a great threat to our plants.

APHIDS..... Yes these tiny looking pests suck out all the nutrients from the plant.  These aphids are also famous as green flies or plant lice.Aphids are also found in Black colour.

These aphids grow very quickly and rapidly, and can destroy plants easily.

What is the solution, how to get rid of these pests?

There are many ways to get rid of these aphids, fortunately organic and within the reach of our garden and kitchen itself.

What to do?

All we need is to follow the following remedies, convenient and  possible.

  • How To Kill Aphids Naturally

If the Infestation is small, we can remove it with our hands. wear gloves and pinch them from leaves and stems. You can also pruneoff the infested part and put it in soap water to kill them.

    • Easy way to remove aphids

A very easy way to remove aphids is removing manually. Wrap a sticky tape to your fingers and very carefully holding infested leaf with another hand, touch the area of Infestation. This would help in sticking the aphids to the tape. This method is applicable if the Infestation is small.

    Removing Aphids
    Rubbing With Hands

    • Apply Water Pressure

By application of garden hose, aphids can be removed off from the plants. In the course small and tiny saplings may damage, but it is another method to get rid of aphids on plants.

    Washing aphids
    Water Pressure

    • Neem oil spray.....
Well known to all gardeners, neem oil helps in getting rid of not only pests, but also many other fungus. Spraying neem oil by diluting it in water would serve the purpose.

    Neem Oil Spray

      •  Birds.....

Yes.... Invite birds to your garden.....how!?we know birds feed on tiny insects and pests. Birds in your garden serves your purpose and also brings beauty. If we offer them food and shelter the birds get attracted and comes to live in your garden. Birds usually prefer to build nests in bushy plants to hide from predators, thus we can grow some bushy plants . we can also invite the birds by offering them some seeds .Small bird houses would also help in this regard
        •  Keep away ants....

As we learnt in the previous post, that ants feed on secretion of these pests, protect them from destruction. We have to divert these ants from aphids by baiting some sugar or other sweet, so that birds has easy access to these pests.

        Ants Feed On Secretion

        •  Natural repellents...

Aphids doesn't like strong aroma , like onions and garlic. Growing these plants can also help in keeping the pests away.

        • Tomato leaf spray.....

Tomato leaves contain some toxic compounds in them. When chopped these toxic compounds release their alkaloids, which helps in destroying aphids.
        Tomato Leaves Aphid Spray
        Tomato Leaves Aphid spray

All you need to do is...
        Take some tomato leaves.
        Some water

How To Make Potting Soil At Home

        By : Kavili Sridhar

        Hi friends ...
        Potting Mix

It's been a long time that we met......

I hope the previous post helped your lovable plants.

Friends, hope u all had your meal, probably not with one variety. We always want varieties in our meal and have it to our stomach's content. What do you say about serving your plants also with varieties in their meal.....not a bad idea, right?

Yes as we wish to have change in taste, from regular dishes, our plants also would feel happy , if they are served with varieties of things.

Now the question is , how to serve our plants with many varieties in one go...

All this is possible with good potting mix.
Yes....potting mix, as you know, it is nothing but mixing up various useful things in the soil before planting a plant.

        Now, what are these varieties?

Here is the list of potting mix materials......

        * Compost
        * Coco peat
        * Red soil

        * Neem powder
        * Sand
        * Cow dung (If Compost is not available, Dried cow dung is the best alternative.)

In the above list coco peat and sand are not nutritious, but helps the plant a lot.

        Compost

Compost is made out of Kitchen waste which is decayed and used as fertilizer. The decaying process is done by Earthworms.preperation at home from kitchen waste takes at least 6 to 8 weeks. It's always advisable to go with home made compost, since it is not possible for beginners, can opt for a ready available compost.

        Coco peat

Coco peat is not nutritious, but helps in retaining moisture. Coco peat is available in two forms ...compressed blocks and powdered Coco peat, of which compressed blocks are preferable. Once water gets in contact with this Coco peat, it loosens and can be easily mixed in the soil.

        Red soil...

it is available in any good nursery. Important for planting. Red soil along with all other materials must be mixed carefully.

        Neem powder ....

Neem powder helps in fighting bacteria and other fungus.

        Ghana Jeevamrutam Balls.....

if u have read my previous post on Ghana jeevamrutam, it is easy to identify, how they look. These balls help the plant in the course of its growth as they get decomposed and provide rich nutrition to the plant. The decomposition of these balls is done with the helps of earth worms, which is also an added benefit to your plants ,as they loosens the soil.

        Ghana Jeevamrutham Balls - Cakes
        Ghana Jeevamrutham Balls - Cakes
         Sand....
again not nutritious, but helps in loosening soil for good penetration of roots.

        Cow Dung.....

As passionate gardeners, we know how useful is cow dung for plants. as mentioned above, its best alternative to compost..

Some materials are not nutritious, but helps the plants in some way.

Before we are ready with potting mix see that we have a sapling ready to transplant.

Now how this transplantaion has to be done ?

sow a seed  in a small grow bag or any other small container, as shown in the picture. It will sprout and gradually grow into a sapling.

        Sprouting, sapling ready to transplant

Now,the most important thing...how to mix all these.

Now Let Us Prepare Potting Mix..

        Ingredients...

Take red soil, compost, Coco peat in 1:1:1 ratio. Now add fist full of neem powder and sand and mix thoroughly.
        Compost,cocopeat,redsoil

red soil, compost, Coco peat in 1:1:1 ratio mixing

        (Optional)
(Bone Meal can also be added here along with neem powder and sand. since some of u may not like its smell. Bone meal is very rich in phosphorus and protein.)

        Bone Meal
        Bone Meal
Now take the container, see that it  has holes for excess water drain. (ill go with grow bag) Now fill 3/4 of the container with this mix, then place  Ghana jeevamrutam balls and 2 ripen bananas top up again with the mix ( in case of tomato plant, you can add raw banana and raw egg, along with GJ balls...you can refer to my previous post for better understanding) now pour water till the water seeps out from the holes.

Ghana jeevamrutam balls and 2 ripen bananas for potting mix
After the mix is settled nicely, it is ready for plantation.

Now the sapling has to be transplanted into the grow bag, which is filled with potting mix.

        Transplanting pictures
After transplantation is done, put some earthworms in the grow bag . this is to loosen the soil, which helps for good penetration of roots.

        Why earth worms?

Earth worms are farmers best friends, since we are also farmers, we too need to have these wriggling friends in our garden. This is the reason why , I placed whole gj balls and banana, before planting the sapling. Now these wrigglers help us in crushing and mixing the gj balls and whole banana in to the soil. When we have these tiny friends, why should we take the hardship of crushing and mixing....what do you say? (for more details click here)

        Earthworms
        Earthworms

After this , it is mandatory to cover or top up with wood husk or dry grass (mulching). This is done to protect the plant from drying up due to sun.Don't for get to water your plant...

        * Compost
        * Coco peat
        * Red soil
        * Neem powder
        * Sand
        * Bone Meal
        * Ghana jeevamrutam balls
        * Cow dung (If Compost is not available, Dried cow dung is the best alternative.)

In the above list coco peat and sand are not nutritious, but helps the plant a lot.

        Compost

Compost is made out of Kitchen waste which is decayed and used as fertilizer. The decaying process is done by Earthworms. preperation at home from kitchen waste takes at least 6 to 8 weeks.

         Sand....
again not nutritious, but helps in loosening soil for good penetration of roots.

After this , it is mandatory to cover or top up with wood husk or dry grass (mulching). This is done to protect the plant from drying up due to sun.Don't for get to water your plant...

Friends,  it's been a long time that we met.... Hope your plants are doing well.

Friends.... today  this post is about  a fungal infection, which causes a lot of damage to our plants. If unnoticed can spread to surrounding plants and results in the death of our lovable plants....

        POWDERY MILDEW......

You might have heard and seen it. It appears on the foliage, stems, fruits and also flowers. It covers the parts of plants  in white layer, resulting in total damage of plant.

Friends...we have some preventive and controlling measures, but not complete elimination. This problem is seen irrespective of season.

Main reasons for the appearance and spread of Mildew....

        Stages of Powdery Mil Dew
        Stages Of  Mildew

        * less aeriation.. Must be puzzled how less aeriation , since pants are in outdoors.  Less aeriation is due to less distance between the plants. This promotes the growth of fungus.

        * Humidity...Humidity also is one of the reasons for the growth of this fungus.

        What to do????

        • Plants must be placed at good distance, so that they get proper aeriation.

        • Plants must be exposed to proper sunlight, for around seven to eight hours.

        Organic remedies.....

Water spray......first very simple remedy is to spray the Infected part with good pressure of water, before sunlight .

        Baking soda
        Baking Soda
        Baking soda.....
Mix baking soda, dormant oil (Tip is given below for preparation of Dormant oil. incase it is not available in market) and Vim liquid in a tumbler  full of water and spray it to the infected parts.

        Milk
        Milk
        Milk...
Yes unboiled milk also helps in fighting this fungal infection. Dilute 1 part milk to 9 parts water and spray to the infected parts of the plants . It not only helps in fighting fungus but also increases immunity of the plant. spray it in full sunlight, do not spray it on cloudy days.

Neem Oil.... Very well known pest control option. it is easily available in the market. u can directly spray it by diluting according to the instructions on the pack, to the infected parts of the plant.

Home Made Dormant Oil : If dormant oil is not available to you , then you can substitute it with your own homemade dormant oil.  All you need to do is ...mix one quarter of motor or engine oil and one tbs fish oil. Immediately before applying to your plants mix 1 quarter oil to 20 quarters water and spray to the infected part.

        Hello friends...

        Garden Soil Testing
        Garden Soil Testing

Today I want to discuss something related to physics....
Don't  get puzzled, the blog is not going to change the content.

Today let us discuss something related to soil.  Since soil is the most important need for a plant to grow, we also need to know the different types of soil.

You might have heard that there are different types of soil....acidic, alkaline, and neutral.

Now the question is how to know the type of soil, since all plants doesn't grow in all types of soil.
We need to test the soil type, and the good news is that we need not go to any lab to test the soil type.

Soil type is measured by pH level.
        Baking Soda - Vinegar
        Baking Soda - Vinegar
Now what is this pH .... pH is power of hydrogen ion, which tells whether a particular soil is acidic or any of the other two types. Now, how to test the soil.....it's very simple and can be done within our kitchen's reach.

First of all, checking  alkaline soil.....

        * Take a small amount of soil in a tumbler and mix two tbs of vinegar to it. (As Show in the picture below)

        checking alkaline soil test
        Checking Alkaline Soil
American Garden Apple Cider Vinegar, 473ml

If you hear any noise like that of bubbling  and the mix is stirring, then your soil is Alkaline.

        Bubbling
        Bubbling

Since vinegar is acidic it will stir up when it come in contact with alkaline soil.

If the soil is not alkaline, then go for another test.
         * Again take a small amount of soil in a small tumbler and add two tbs of baking soda and mix it with water in to thick consistency. If you hear any bubbling noise and if the mix is stirring, then your soil is acidic.

        Checking Acidic Soil
Soil Not Reacting with Baking Soda, Since It Is Alkaline
Since the soil is proved Alkaline, with the previous test, now it doesn't react with Baking Soda.

        * My Garden Soil Is Proved Alkaline.
We can do the same test with Baking Soda, to know if the soil is Acidic
Since baking soda is Alkaline it will stir up when it comes in contact with acidic soil.

*** If you don't observe any bubbling noise, then your soil is neutral.

***********  friends this test doesn't give you exact pH level of the soil, but gives you some inputs related to the type of soil.

        Hi! friends…..
Ghana Jeevamrutham BallsAll plant lovers, terrace farmers… not satisfied with your own veggies? though nurturing them with lot  of love and care….

        Results Of Ghana Jeevamrutham
        Handfull Produce

In the previous post we learnt about liquid jeevamrutam, which lasts for a short period, but surely a wonderful recipe for plants. But what to do to store it for a longer period. It may not be possible for busy plant lovers to prepare jeevamrutam, every week.Another important Organic Manure is Vermi Compost.Adding V – C to the potting soil would help the plant for a month or two.V – C is usefull to the plants, But Practically its not possible to remix the soil with vermi compost.

        Ghana Jeevamrutham Balls-Cakes
Ghana Jeevamrutham Balls Ready to Use.

        How to use it?

Depending on the size of plant and size of ball or cake, we need to place one or two near the plant or we can Powder the balls and apply to the plant. After placing the G – J balls, cover it with dry leaves/Wood Husk (Mulching),this would help in retaining Moisture and growth in Microbes. If u want to plant a new plant, mix the Powdered Ghana Jeevamrutham to the potting soil.

Therefore the requirement if full filled with Ghana Jeevamrutham.

What difference do we find ?
If we place that balls or cakes near the plant , we observe farmer’s friends…….yes really tiny earthworms slowly decomposing the balls in to the soil. This would help loosening as well as getting the manure deep in to the soil. U can also observe fresh and tiny ‘Roots’ absorbing nutrients. (as u can see in the picture below).

Roots Going In To G – J Balls

Feeling really excited to prepare G – J and enjoy the results lively, then let us learn the preparation.

        How to prepare Ghana jeevamrutam?
It’s very simple to prepare. All we need is the following material.

        Ghana Jeevamrutham Matterial

        Materials Required For G – J

        • Cow dung – 10 kgs
        • Cow urine – As Per Requirement
        • Peas besan powder – 200 grms
        • Jaggery – 200 grms
        • Anthill Soil – fist full

        Preparation:

Take cow dung and add besan to it and mix thoroughly. Now add Grated jaggery and slowly blend it with cow urine (consistency must be like Chapathi Dough) Excessive Use of Cow Urine May Loosen the Mix. After mixing all these ingredients thoroughly, make medium size balls and let them dry under shade.  Do not expose the balls to sunlight, that would hinder the growth of microbes.
